Here on South Padre Island the spring break party starts during the first week of March, with college students from Northern states heading down to the island first, followed by students from Texas schools coming down for the second and third weeks of the month. Typically the college spring break scene takes place on the beaches at the south end of the island in the afternoon, with huge stages for DJ's, plus MC's rallying the crowd and organizing tug of wars and dance contests. The ARMY sets up obstacle courses and challenges, and all kinds of other activities and booths are hosted by dozens of Corporate Sponsors. After dark, the majority of the breakers head to one of the island's 'mega bars', like Louie's Backyard, MoonCussers, or Club Chaos, which are infamous spring break destinations in their own right!
The great thing about kiteboarding on South Padre during spring break is that the riding scene isn't really affected by all the action on Coca-Cola Beach in front of the Isla Grande. The North Flats beach is a private launch run by the SPI windsurfing and kiteboarding association, and is protected by a gate and signs, keeping our flat water riding area crowd free throughout the month. In a lot of ways, kiting the North Flats in March is better than later in the spring when the majority of the kite crowd shows up and the air starts getting crowded. And as for riding on the ocean side, relatively clear beach can always be found by heading north, and especially if you get a beach sticker and drive a few miles past the end of the road. Of course there is nothing that compares to riding in front of the crowd of 20,000 college kids partying in the sun on the south end! However, with so many people on the beach, public safety is definitely a priority, and all levels of riders need to be careful of people on the beach and in the water, and as tempting as it is, to not throw tricks or kite irresponsibly in close to the shore.
Kiteboarding lessons during spring break are super fun, with Air Padre doing our best to introduce as many people to kiteboarding as possible through student spring break packages and group kiteboarding lesson discounts. With more and more college students discovering the sport each year, we are anticipating and looking forward to an increase of kiteboarding activity here on the island in March. In the future, look for South Padre Island to host Collegiate Kiteboarding Association meets and other contests or demo events during this wild and windy month. And the best part is that although the wind is usually good, and the water is warmed up to shorty or board shorts temps, if kiteboarding or surfing isn't happening, there is plenty of activities and partying to enjoy.
