The kite land board lesson is a 1.5 hour course for $99. No prior experience in kite flying or landboarding is needed to take this class. Kite land boarding is a sport that has grown from the sport of kite surfing. The board of choice of kite landboarding is a mountain board with large tires, and sometimes foot straps. The idea behind the sport is similar to kitesurfing as far as kite and board control, although it is done on the land and not in the water. The biggest problem with kite land boarding is finding ample space to ride and fly the kite, without worry of trees, power lines, or automobiles getting in the way. Unlike kite boarding, where you are out on the open water, where there are generally less hazards, finding a wide open grassy or sandy area is harder to find. Luckily, many open areas exist in South Padre Island. The sand flats at the north end of the island are a great place to learn and practice. The sand flats on South Padre stretch for miles of flat compact sand without cars or trees.

Kite land boarding does not require as large of a power kite to get going.
Because you do not need the kite hold up your body weight, like it would while kite boarding or kite snowboarding in deep powder,
land boarding can be done with a smaller kite.
The land board is also more efficient and causes less drag than kite surfing in the water.
A two or three meter trainer kite therefore usually provides the appropriate amount of power to get you riding on the sand flats.

Since you don not have to struggle with the water start(generally the hardest part of water kite boarding),
you can be up and riding the board on the first lesson, getting the feel of what kiteboarding is all about.

Kite land boarding is done on the land, which is harsher to fall on than the water. Precautions should be taken to safely integrate into the sport of kite land boarding, and the having the proper instructor will save you allot of time and potential injuries. Since the hard ground is not forgiving, the instructors will start you with simply flying the kite to get a feel for its movements and how to control it. As you progress, and your kite skills become more advanced, then they will start to implement the mountain board. Using the kite to provide power, you will soon be riding all over the sand flats of South Padre Island, Texas.
